Pass It On

Making sure you and your kids use proper brushing techniques is the foundation of developing and maintaining good oral hygiene. A good dental routine not only helps you to have a happy and healthy mouth, it also teaches your children the importance of caring for their teeth as well.

Keep in mind, though, that getting children interested in brushing their teeth is only half the battle. Not only must your kids understand why it’s important to brush their teeth, you must also make sure that they’re doing it correctly.

The Basics
Just like adults, children are required to brush their teeth for two minutes at least twice a day. This may seem daunting at first, but keep in mind that brushing for the recommended two minutes will help your child reduce plaque and develop clean teeth and fewer cavities. Making sure they brush in circles with massaging strokes, have them:

  • Brush the outer surface of their upper teeth, then their lower teeth
  • Brush the inner surface of their upper teeth, then their lower teeth
  • Finish by brushing the chewing surface of their teeth

Positive Reinforcement

Getting your children to brush their teeth can be challenging. To help your kids along, it’s important to make brushing a positive learning experience for them. If things don’t go smoothly at first, try different ways to make the process a little more fun, like letting them pick out their own toothbrush or rewarding them with a sticker.

Above all else, be sure to praise your children for a job well done! Encouraging their good brushing habits early on will go a long way in helping them keep their teeth healthy!

Common Brushing Mistakes

Good oral hygiene not only involves using the right techniques, but also recognizing the common mistakes we make while brushing our teeth. Oftentimes, we tend to brush our teeth too hard, use an incorrect brushing motion, fail to brush long or often enough, or forget to change our toothbrush at least every three months. These actions can be just as harmful as not brushing at all, so it’s important to know the dos and don’ts of proper dental care.
